The sport that we call “football” is called “American روما بت” everywhere else in the world. While it may not be as popular in other countries, it is very popular in America. In fact, according to some sources, football is the most popular sport in America.
Americans’ love of football is cultural, too. We invented it. It’s our sport. It’s ingrained into our lives. Young boys watch football on TV and learn how to throw spirals in their backyard. They play football in the field at recess. Not everyone does. Some people would say it’s their least favorite sport (preferring basketball, baseball, or hockey). But enough people love it that tickets to football games are often hard to obtain because they sell out so quickly.
Football is considered a “tough” sport. Look at football players; they are usually big and strong people, and they have to be due to the nature of the sport. If a big guy is trying to tackle you, you have to be strong enough to resist him, fast enough to get away, and tough enough to get up afterwards and do it again. In fact, because of the roughness of football, most teams only play one game a week and use the rest of the week to recover. Compare this to baseball, for example, where teams can play a few games a week, and sometimes even two games in the same day (called a “doubleheader”).
Because of its reputation for toughness, football is also considered a “manly” sport (although plenty of women play). Strength, power, endurance, toughness, these are traits that are considered manly, and they are some of the same traits that are required in football.
It is also popular because of the team aspect. One man cannot play football nor can one man win a football game. You need the entire team. People to throw the ball where it needs to go, people to block, people to tackle, and people who can catch the ball and run quickly while evading the other team’s attempts to stop them. When you score a touchdown, the team celebrates together because they made it happen, and the fans celebrate the success of their favorite team.
Football also has an elemental appeal. Have you ever seen a football game where it started raining or snowing? What happened? The game kept going! In addition to dealing with overcoming their opponents, they now also had to deal with the weather. This can add an element of excitement to the game!
